Gangtok, Aug 24: Former Patna High Court Chief Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai has been appointed Chairperson of the Sikkim State Human Rights Commission.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang extended his congratulations and best wishes to Justice Rai, expressing confidence that her judicial experience, wisdom and commitment to public service would strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights across Sikkim.
The Chief Minister described the appointment as a significant example of women’s empowerment under the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha government. He said the state government firmly believes that women must receive equal opportunities to lead, serve and contribute meaningfully in positions of responsibility.
Tamang reiterated the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for women in governance, administration, education, entrepreneurship, public service and leadership.
He wished Justice Rai a successful and impactful tenure as Chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission.
Justice Rai, a native of Sikkim, became the first woman from the state to serve as a High Court judge. She was elevated as a judge of the Sikkim High Court in April 2015 and served several terms as its Acting Chief Justice.
She later took oath as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on June 5, 2026, and served until her retirement on July 11, 2026.
