Pakyong, Aug 22 : Sikkim has gained national recognition in the field of education since Sushma Tamang, a Post Graduate Teacher of Chemistry at the PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School in Dikling, in the Pakyong District, has been chosen for the National Teachers’ Award 2026.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) conveyed his congratulations to the educator on her achievement and referred to her selection as a source of great pride for Sikkim, highlighting it as an acknowledgement of her dedication to teaching, academic excellence and the holistic development of students.

The Sikkim Education Department has similarly confirmed her appointment in response to communications it received from the Department of School Education and Literacy of the Union Ministry of Education, and the award will be presented by the President of India in New Delhi on September 5, which is Teachers’ Day.

The Chief Minister congratulated Tamang, pointing out that her achievement showed her dedication to education and would act as an inspiration to teachers throughout the State.

The National Teachers’ Awards are given every year to acknowledge teachers who have made exceptional contributions to improving the quality of school education and to promoting the general development of students. The national awards programme is managed under the oversight of the Ministry of Education.

In order to be awarded in 2026, teachers went through a multi-stage selection process which involved district or regional committees, State or organisation-level committees and an Independent National Jury. The evaluation takes into account a number of factors such as improvements in learning outcomes, innovative teaching practices, experiential learning, co-curricular initiatives and the use of teaching-learning materials.

The fact that Tamang has been selected brings not only recognition to the PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School in Dikling but also to Sikkim’s teaching community, emphasizing the contributions of teachers from the state at the national level.
